Lance Maki was born in Saint Johns, Michigan in 1947. At age 14, his family moved to southern California where he quickly fell in love with the ocean, bought his first surfboard, and rode waves daily. After high school, he met & married Kristine and soon began a career as an Air Force pilot which took him everywhere but near an ocean. Thirty years & six kids later (plus medical school/residency!), Kris suggested that Lance take their youngest son Mike to a surf camp in So Cal and possibly get back in the water himself. Lance’s

first thought was “I am WAY too old to surf again at 50” and the geographical hurdle of living in Indiana at that time. Despite the obstacles, the two headed to the coast where Lance immediately rediscovered his passion for surfing.

In 2002, the Maki’s moved back to California. On his first day at the hospital, a staff member asked Lance why he was hanging around the desk at the labor & delivery unit. It was obvious she did not think he was the new MD in charge as she eyeballed his goatee, tousled hair and wave tattoo on his left arm. She questioned her co-workers and humbly confirmed that he was who he said he was. When he arrived to work the next morning, he instantly noticed the assignment board with

“DR SURFERDUDE” in bold letters with a much smaller “Dr Maki” beside it. The nickname stuck and he’s been known as Dr Surfer Dude ever since.

The following year, Lance & Kris started a wellness program for men MakiMD Restoration Medicine (circle trademark) using surfing as one of it’s prime vehicles for exercise. Dr Surfer Dude’s Surf School was subsequently

established in 2007.

In the meantime, never-ending learner Lance decided to try out tandem surfing. Because it is considerably more difficult than surfing solo, he hired a personal trainer and began ballet + gymnastics lessons to improve balance and perform stunts with a partner on the board. In 2008 Lance and tandem partner Jaci were crowned Grand Master Tandem Champions at the famous Duke Kahanamoku Surf Contest and in 2012, they were ranked #9 on the ITSA World Tandem Tour. He also wrote a book Takes Two to Tandem

about surfing and his life adventures.

At age 75, Lance now lives on the “other” coast with his wife and family. He is still working full time as an OBGyn Hospitalist, running his wellness practice MakiMD Restoration Medicine (which includes FAA exams for pilots), and undoubtedly surfing anytime the ocean calls his name 🌊.
